Star Trek 3ish Has a Title

Simon Pegg, apparently forgetting that he exists in a culture where everything he says will be dissected at length, made some inopportune comments to the Radio Times regarding the current state of science fiction and genre cinema. Of course, Pegg is a pretty huge nerd, and criticizing things we love is literally just sort of a past time for most us.

Pegg put up a post on his personal site to explain the comments (and he does a pretty good job of it), but buried in that wall of text is one important thing that’d be easy to miss.

What is that? Well, it’s title of the next Star Trek film.

Pegg is, of course, one of the writers of the upcoming third Abramsverse Star Trek film, which we’ve jokingly called Star Trek 3ish around here. Well, no more — because now we can refer to it by its proper title: Star Trek Beyond.

The Beyond title has been rumored for about a month now, but this is the first official confirmation of it. It’s not terrible, and it continues the attempts to grammatically fit the Star Trek franchise name into phrases awkwardly begun by Star Trek into Darkness.

Star Trek Beyond should hit theaters July 8, 2016.
