Darth Vader Confirmed For ‘Rogue One,’ Forest Whitaker Playing a ‘Clone Wars’ Character

There are a lot of questions about this December’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is set just before the original Episode IV. What classic characters might appear, and how does it connect to the larger Star Wars narrative? Well we’re starting to get some of those answers.

One of the biggest questions has been whether or not Darth Vader would appear in the film. Unlike most of the original cast, there isn’t really an aging issue with Vader (as James Earl Jones still sounds like James Earl Jones). His appearance has been rumored for a while (as it would make sense considering his position in the Empire during the film’s setting).

Well, we now know for sure that Darth Vader will appear in the film. No word yet on how much of the film he’ll be in, but I fully expect fans to start cheering when he appears on screen in the theaters.

Another interesting piece of Rogue One news is the identity of Forest Whitaker’s character. While most of the characters in the film are new to the franchise, Whitaker is actually playing a character die hard completionist fans have seen before. You see, Whitaker is playing a character named Saw Gerrera. Saw Gerrera first showed up in the fifth season of the Clone Wars animated series (voiced by Andrew Kishino), and was part of a group being unofficially trained by Obi-wan Kenobi.

It’s unlikely that they’ll dwell too much on the character’s history (as most of the people seeing Rogue One won’t have seen the Clone Wars series), but it’s nice to know that Lucasfilm is taking their cartoons seriously enough to have a character cross over into a major film.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes to theaters December 16, 2016.

  • I remember when I was 5, I had a Vader toy with James Earl Jones voice. And it really puts me to sleep. Anyway, thanks for the updates for this new Star Wars movie.
