Atomic Monster Weekend Cancelled Last Minute (Not That You’d Know It)

If you go to the Facebook page or Eventbrite listing for Atomic Monster Weekend, you might assume it’s still happening October 27-29 in Mesa, AZ. I mean sure, the show’s Instagram has gone mysteriously private and the website seems to be down — but you can still buy a ticket. But if you show up to the Sheraton Mesa on the 27th, you’re going to find an empty ballroom.

Because the show has been cancelled.

In a post that went live briefly before the official Instagram went private, show organizer O’Neal Pignani (under the name “Dr. Shriek”) announced that the convention was being “postponed” due to his father being terminally ill. This announcement has not appeared in any other form that we can find, and this screenshot was all we were able to track down:

atomicmonsterweekend Sorry for not making an official announcement till now! Due to my father being terminally ill, and being rushed to ICU a few days ago, l've had to reschedule Atomic Monster Weekend to next year in April 2024. I've been waiting to hear back from The Sheraton in Mesa since they've already received payment. However they've been telling vendors etc that it's cancelled, and they're not returning my money. I'm forced to find a new hotel, and Atomic Monster Weekend will happen. I have no intention to steal anyone's money, just life has hit me with this family health emergency, and I need to take care things. But please don't worry. Those vendors and attendees who booked a hotel room, please be sure to get your money back from the Sheraton Mesa. For the local vendors that are freaking out, please don't spread lies that l've stolen your money. Tomorrow I'm getting legal rep, and will be taking legal action for those people that are slandering me. Please say a prayer for my father. And stay tuned for another update regarding Atomic Monster Weekend. Thank you everyone for your support, Dr. Shriek

Now we don’t know the veracity of the statement, but the fact that there is no way for the public to currently see it is incredibly strange.

If the name Neal Pignani sounds familiar, it’s likely because he cancelled the event It Came From the 80’s Weekend back in 2019 under strange circumstances, literally deleting all of the show’s social media. Additionally, when we researched that article we found claims going back to 2013 accusing him of not paying contracted artists. We have not been able to verify those claims still, but it’s hard to ignore them under the current circumstances.

At it’s most charitable reading, Mr. Pignani would have to be the unluckiest man in the world — and that seems like a good enough reason to not do business with him.

They also wrote and drew the now completed webcomic UnCONventional, and produce the podcasts BS-Free Witchcraft, On This Day With Trae, Stormwood & Associates, The Meatgrinder, and The Nerd & Tie Podcast. This leads many to ask how the heck they have the time to get it all done. Trae says they have the time because they “do it all quite poorly.”

Thank you for reporting on this. I was one of the ticket holders and was never notified of the cancelation by the organizer or Event Brite. Fortunately I saw the IG post before driving to Mesa!
